Ways to Protect Children from Dental Trauma

Suggestions for Families to Prevent Dental Trauma in Babies

Dental trauma is one of the most common dental problems in children. With the start of walking, dental trauma is more common between the ages of 1 and 3 and between the ages of 7 and 10, which is the school-age period. The teeth most affected by these traumas are the upper anterior incisors.

Although it is possible to prevent dental trauma in children, the damage it causes when the teeth are hit is also different. While mild hits cause damage to soft tissues, severe hits can also cause the tooth to break or even come out of its root. Regardless of the shape and size of dental traumas, you should contact your dentist when problems such as loss of consciousness, bleeding, vomiting, nausea, speech difficulties are seen.

What to Do to Avoid Dental Trauma?

Preventing dental trauma in babies is one of the most sensitive issues for families. Although the incidence of dental trauma seen especially in toddlers increases, dental trauma can be prevented by taking simple precautions.

For dental trauma in children, first of all, care should be taken not to keep objects that will cause the baby to trip and fall in the toddlers. In addition, being with the baby during walking will reduce the possibility of falling.

Helmets, knee guards, elbow protectors can be used to protect the teeth of school-age children and children doing sports. Protective mouthguard can be preferred for children who do individual or team sports in order not to be exposed to dental trauma. When protective equipment is used, the probability of trauma in the child will be reduced.

What to Do When Dental Traumas Occur?

If the measures taken to prevent dental trauma in children are not enough, it is important to contact your dentist as soon as possible in complicated dental traumas such as tooth fracture and tooth dislocation. In addition, finding the broken tooth will provide an advantage to the dentist for treatment.

If the tooth is not dislodged but is shaking, you should contact your dentist again without touching the tooth. Non-steady teeth are fixed for 1-4 weeks. After trauma, the family should be as calm as possible to avoid possible harm. Even if there is no visible problem in the teeth after dental trauma in children, it is important to go to the dentist examination at an appropriate time.
